Promotion of soil & water conservation practices

Gully Plugs with traditional methods have been designed to ensure soil & water conservation in the villages and support provided to villagers. Four acres of wasteland has been developed for fodder crop cultivation.

In line with the 'Integrated Meghalaya Basin Development Project' we are promoting traditional as well as modern practices of soil and water conservation in the villages. There are two types of lands under cultivation; one is paddy fields and the other is hill slopes. Traditionally, paddy fields are very well bunded and the process meets all the technical requirements and takes care of the soil-water conservation and management. But all other crops like ginger, broomsticks, potato, pineapple etc. are grown on hill slopes which require natural control on erosion.

To address this issue, SACH has undertaken several awareness interventions at village level with the farmers in presence of the village council. Training by agriculture experts on different methods of trenching, bunding and plugging was conducted. A collective decision was taken to integrate' gully plugging' in all the villages to address the issue of soil erosion. For this, the project provided communities with logistic and technical support.
