The major focus of the initiative is to build individual household toilets in the project area. As revealed by the pre-project survey, out of the total 1644 HHs surveyed, 1640 HHs have reported to not have any toilet and the people defecate in the open. Going by the number, the initiative is likely to give a massive push to the Swachh Bharat mission.
According to the survey, only four HHs have existing toilet facilities. These HHs are in Tilia GP. This makes only 0.12% of the HHs surveyed.
Upon further discussions, it is noted that out of the 4 HHs, toilets in only 2 HHs are being used by all the members of the family. 1 of the HHs have cited reasons for not using the toilet by all its HH members as presence of elderly; not in capacity to access the toilet.
It may also be noted that both cited 'hand washing' facilities not being available near the toilets for 3 out of 4 HHs. There could be an understanding on awareness regarding washing of hands post defecation, however upon questioning the awareness, it is found the communities are aware of the same. This is taken up ahead under this chapter.
